UBC Apple Festival

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

We can’t wait to head out to the UBC Botanical Garden this weekend for the 20th anniversary of the UBC Apple Festival. There will be over 37,000+ pounds of apples including 9000 pounds of the freshest yummiest organic apples around. Last year, there were apples as big as the kids’ heads. Now there’s a good healthy snack!

The event is on all weekend (October 16 and 17) from 11 am to 4pm. The Apple Festival includes free valet bike parking, a really awesome children’s area with all sorts of apple themed games, crafts and activities for the little ones. The delightful yoymama.ca will also be there with a craft table and super give-away. Plus, lively Grist to the Mill, will be playing a family friendly concert from 1-2pm on both days. Did we mention that there is also apple pie, hot apple cider and other delectable treats?

Unbelievably, admission is only $2.00 (kids 12 and under are free) and includes entrance to the whole, gorgeous Botanical Garden. If you haven’t had a chance to enjoy the Greenheart Canopy Walkway, there is a 15% discount with admission to the Apple Festival. It’s amazing.

If you would like to taste the over 60 varieties of heritage, new and “tried and true” varieties available, go early to the apple tasting. This yummy diversion is an additional $3.00 but we think it is entirely worth it. Yum.

An East Van elementary school needs your vote!

Laura Secord Elementary School has been undergoing a seismic upgrade for the past year. As a result, the children have lost most of their outdoor play equipment, and more than half of their play space.

Laura Secord has entered a contest to win up to $500,000 for a sustainable, earth friendly, wheelchari accessible playground – one the whole community can enjoy for years to come. They need to be in the Top 10 to get into the semi finals and have their proposal in the running to win.

It takes only minutes to sign up for an account and one click to vote.
Anyone with an email account can register and vote at: http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf5890.

Please spread the word and vote daily until October 15, 2010.  8 days left!!!!!

Our Visit to the UBC Botanical Garden

Friday, May 28th, 2010

On a sunny Saturday a few weeks ago, I took my kids on an adventure to the UBC Botanical Garden. We went to walk high above the ground in the midst of gorgeous big trees on the Greenheart Canopy Walkway. We were all super excited and our trip did not disappoint.

When we got to the beginning of the walkway, a guide met us to give us a very informative tour as we were climbing the gently swinging roped-in walkway. Not only did he tell us about the different trees, but he included information about the animals that favoured them, the uses of each by First Nations Peoples and how the walkway was constructed without any harm to the trees themselves. My kids found this part the most fascinating… How does the walkway and all the big platforms around the trees stay up without any nails or fasteners drilled into the trees?

At the end of our tour, he let us jump and bounce on the last part of the walkway which was pretty amazing. We had some time left and went for a stroll through the gardens themselves.

There are bee hives, a tunnel, a giant boulder to climb on and some of the most amazing plants you have ever seen. A favourite was the ancient Gingko Biloba tree. I can’t wait for my next free Saturday as the garden is always changing and is worth visiting several times over the year. This is also a perfect place to bring visitors from out-of-town.

The Botanical Garden has just started kids summer camps – what a great place to send your little ones for a week of fun! You can learn more about the Garden’s Young Explorers Summer Day Camp program here. There’s a contest on the yoyomama.ca website to win a free week at camp too (enter soon, the contest only runs until June 7th).
