When noodling the web we came across this awesome website Draw a Stickman.

It’s one of the first things kids learn to draw and adults continue to do so through the rest of their lives.

Here you can be simple or as elaborate as you would like. It will come to life and go on an adventure. When your stick man comes upon an obstacle, you are encouraged to draw other objects to help get your character out of trouble.

You can download the free Stickman app here. We have also discouvered the AppCrayon really helps those little hands!

Have fun! Please send us a screen capture of your drawings so we can post them. Better yet. If you send us a drawing that involves dandelion we will send you a special discount code. Attack of the dandelions?

Happy drawing! We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

If you have no plans and you’re looking for something fun to do tomorrow night, our friends at Coast Modern are throwing a fundraising soiree in Strathcona.

Coast Modern is a documentary project about the history of residential modernist architecture on the West Coast of North America, and how our laid back culture informed the movement.

For anyone with an interest in Modernism, or a chance to mix with some of the local luminaries of the modernist architecture set, here’s your opportunity to do it with oysters on the half shell and fine local wine and beer!

Tickets are $10, including a free drink. If any of you design oriented types are interested in snapping up a limited poster, you can snap up a ticket + poster for $100. Our favourite is the blue handmade limited edition Byron O’Neill silkscreen print, but the pink one is pretty awesome too!

Buy Tickets Here: http://coastmodernfundraiser.eventbrite.com

Invite your friends on Facebook.

As you may know, dandelion KIDS is a big fan of recycling, so when we found these Eco Star Crayons we were delighted! They are made from pure, non-toxic Crayola-brand recycled wax crayons, saving more than 45,000 pounds of broken crayons from landfills. The Crayon Recycling Program provides recycling education to students and employs people with developmental disabilities. Now that’s something to draw about!

These beautiful eco-friendly tree pencils come from sustainable Tamarind trees which are abundant in South East Asia. Tamarind trees are farmed for their fruit and when trimmed the twigs are used to make Eco-Tree Pencils.

We’ve been asked many times where we get our ideas for our windows, so we thought we would share the building of our ‘Back to School’ window display at our Commercial Drive location.

All photos have been taken on the iPhone.

First: We had the desks painted by our friend Sean at AL Creations. Thanks Sean!

Oh so neat and tidy all in a row.

Then Jimmy and Pete loaded them up and delivered them. Thanks Jimmy and Pete, we think you’re swell!

Then we stacked them and realized that we had to hold them in place while Greg used wire to secure them… This took many, many hours… We even ran out of wire and had to go get more.

Art Fun and Theatre Fun: Together on The Art Express.

We just get so happy whenever we see the amazing Art Express bus zooming around the neighbourhood so we were thrilled to hear about their collaboration with the Cultch.

On Saturday May 1, The Art Express launched a terrific event to go along with The Family Time Series at The Cultch. Participants in the program got involved in a puppet making workshop on board The Art Express, and then were led inside The Cultch for a presentation of “The Tooth Fairy”, a puppet play presented by The Old Trout Puppet Workshop from Alberta.

“This was a partnership that was just waiting to happen. The idea of pulling up with our bus right in front of The Cultch, making puppets and then heading in for a puppet play, made for such a complete creative experience! I really love the idea of supporting a great place like The Cultch – such a wonderful venue with so much cool stuff going on – we need to turn our attention to such cultural events, and enrich our lives by sharing in the talent that surrounds us” (Michael Bray, owner/operator of The Art Express).

The Family Time Series at The Cultch will continue next year, beginning in the Fall, and The Art Express will be offering up their art fun/theatre fun combo to families with children between 6 – 10 years of age. The Cultch plans to hold four family time series over the 2010/2011 theatre season. Contact The Art Express by e-mail info@theartexpress.com for more information and to be put on their contact list.

Family FUSE Weekend – Green World
November 21 & 22, 2009
10am-5pm, in the Gallery

This Family FUSE Weekend explores the Green World: from a sense of awe and wonder with nature to the human desire to shape and change our environment.

Explore a magical forest through collaborative drawing, create an animation or sound work, witness dance performances or even encounter Big Foot. This Family Fuse Weekend will address everything from ecological concerns to the mythical world around us, giving the entire family new ways to think about the Green World.

Check out the VAG website for admission info and other kid-related events.

We are so pleased that our lovely friend Erin has realized her dream! Her new retail shop and workshop space, Collage Collage, opening on Saturday, September 12 (Join the party from 1-4 in the afternoon!) in East Vancouver, is light-filled and airy. A perfect space for everyone who would like to engage with the arts, find inspiration and explore contemporary works through workshops and classes. A long wooden table dominates the space, inviting creativity and collaboration. It is a place to find some art supplies, a story book, a small sculpture or a new pair of scissors – and that hardest to find of necessary art items – a good pencil sharpener!

We have had the pleasure of having Erin lead a Halloween-based craft workshop at dandelion KIDS that was enjoyed by all, the results of which made up one of our most beautiful and spooky window displays! And long ago, when he was in preschool, Stefanie’s son Jasper, was seriously enamored of Erin after she led several art classes. Her education in the fine arts and her gentle approach will ensure that participants of her workshops will be inspired to create and learn, over and over again.

We can’t wait to sign up!
