Wednesday Morning Storytime: And to Name But Just a Few

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Olives, trees, pickles, peas . . . What do they have in common? All of them are green! In her debut picture book, Laurie Rosenwald-a New York-based designer explores the world of color through humorous poetry and dynamic collages. Pink flamingos aspire to be ballerinas, yellow taxis screech to a halt at red stop signs, and black cats relax with the morning crossword puzzle.

More than just an introduction to basic colors, this book shows how colors interact and enrich our everyday lives. Clever rhyming text and bold, graphic illustrations are sure to make this book a favorite read-aloud.

About Wednesday Morning Story Time: We will be reading a different book from our vast (and growing!) selection of amazing childrens’  books on Wednesdays at 10:30 am at our Port Moody location. Try to swing by Wednesday mornings… and we’ll read to your child while you can enjoy the book, browse, shop or just daydream. If you like the book we’ve read, you will be able purchase it at a special price on the day of the reading.

Please RSVP with a phone call or email so we have an idea of how many pillows to put out.

BIG, BIG LOVE to all who donated to our Food Drive.

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

Last Monday we dropped off almost 1 tonne of food to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank!!  The lovely man in the picture said he was very, very impressed and even knew our shops having bought a puzzle from us. That made our hearts sing!

At the beginning of our Share the Love Food Drive, we were a little discouraged.  No one was bringing food! We kept hearing that it was such a great idea, but where was the food? Were people confused? Was it just another art installation, what were we doing??  With a little personal explanation to our clients, we were able to fill both the Port Moody and Commercial Drive windows with lots food for the Food Bank.  In the end, our lovely communities pulled together and made a huge donation possible.  A special big thanks to our neighbour, Havana Restaurant, who donated a whopping 100 cans.  And, another big thanks to Peter, who got to use his new truck and his muscles to transport the goods!

Once again, we thank you and the Vancouver Food Bank thanks you.

As promised, we have held a draw for two $50 gift certificates to dandelion KIDS and x2 Danica Chef’s Apron & Hat sets. And the winners are:

$50 Gift Certificates- Audey Korpus and his son will have fun spending their gift certificate as will Melissa Reid for her newborn baby!

Chef’s Apron/Hat sets – Annie Tomljanovic’s 3 year old daughter, Lara (see photo below!) will be stylin’ in the kitchen and so will June Thompson’s little one.

If you didn’t have a chance to donate, please take the time to drop off your donations at Greater Vancouver Food Bank, located at 1150 Raymur Avenue, 5 minutes from dandelion KIDS on the Drive.

Our end result…

The Red Shoes – Wednesday Morning Story Time

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

All of the shoes in the store are plain and dull except for one pair: the apple red shoes, just waiting to be picked. The little girl knows they are the shoes for her, but can she convince her mom? This cheerful tale is matched with charming illustrations that depict the fashions of the 1960′s.

The Red Shoes is written by Eleri Glass and illustrated by Ashley Spires.

Tools by Taro Miura – Wednesday Morning Story Time!

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Who do you think of when you see a hammer and a saw? A carpenter! What about a shovel and a watering can? In Taro Miura’s deceptively simple book, children will discover more than sixty different tools, both familiar and new. Even the youngest readers will find the striking images engaging, and older children will be fascinated by the chance to guess which profession uses each set of tools before they turn the page. A wonderful tour of a variety of jobs and the tools they use to fix, build, and create.

Taro Miura is a multiple-award-winning illustrator and graphic designer. He lives in Japan.

Native Shoes at dandelion KIDS plus The Howard

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Introducing the Howard by Native Shoes from Native Shoes on Vimeo.

Such a silly, funny little film. When opportunity knocks loudest, say inviting a sea nymph aboard, it never hurts to have a pair of Native’s at the ready and make them Howards. Frisky polkadots, ocean magic, and sunny nothings. The Howard, keep it lite.

We are so excited to have our first batch of kids Native Shoes in store now! How completely cute and practical all at once! Native shoes come in bright crayon colours with great styling riffing on iconic sneaker silhouettes like Vans or Converse. Best of all, they are lightweight, anti-microbial, durable and super easy to put on. Perfect for the park, for preschool, for the beach plus they’re from our home town, Vancouver! What’s not to love?

You can even throw them in the dishwasher!

Available in sizes 2-Junior 4.

The Boy From the Sun – Wednesday Morning Story Time

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

The Boy From the Sun by Duncan Weller.

Three gloomy children sit on the sidewalk when a little boy with a yellow, shining head floats down beside them. He takes them on a journey through the wonders of nature. Evocative illustrations combine with poetic text in this enchanting story about taking the time to appreciate the natural world.

Duncan Weller recently won the top Canadian illustration prize, the Governor General’s Award for Children’s Literature, Illustration. He both writes and illustrates his children’s picture books. His adult paintings combine traditional working methods with new technologies culminating in DVD/CD projects enlisting the help of animators and musicians. A retrospective of his work was held at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery from April 4 to May 18, 2008. Duncan now spends equal time writing adult works, poetry, short stories, and is currently working on a screenplay for a film to be shot in Thunder Bay.

Wednesday Morning Story Time

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

The Happy Lion written by Louise Fatio and illustrated by Robert Duvoisin.

A friendly lion in a small French zoo enjoys the visits of the townspeople who stop by each day to say Bonjour, Happy Lion. So one day, when the zookeeper forgets to close the lion’s door, the Happy Lion decides to return the visits to all the nice people of the town. To his amazement, as he strolls through the town his friends scream and run from him, the police and fire brigade are called, and people cower in their shops or houses. How a small boy saves the day concludes a wonderfully satisfying story that is just the right length for bedtime or anytime.

At age 50, The Happy Lion continues to charm and delight. We couldn’t agree more!
